Born in Nov 1957, Prof. Li obtained her Bachelor Degree in civil engineering from Chongqing Architecture University in 1982, a Master Degree in architecture management in 1987. She successfully obtained her PHD in construction economics and management from the University of Reading in the UK in 1998, and became the 106th President of the CIOB in June 2009 for her remarkable achievement in professional sector.
Prof. Li took part in the College Entrance Exam in 1977. Unlike the other girls who selected accounting, management or medicine, she chose civil engineering because her father was a successful civil engineer. After graduation she became a lecturer at her alma mater. From 1993 she started to study abroad, first in Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, then in University of Reading, UK, followed Professor Roger Flanagan for PHD research.
I had a lot of pressure from homesickness and heavy research works. In addition to my doctoral thesis, I had to work with Prof. Roger Flanagan to complete a comparative study on the Sino-British construction industry. There was no time to go out to work for money. Because there is no additional source of income, I can only try to save money, to minimise my living cost. -- Prof. Shirong Li
