First Ever Chinese-Scottish Cooperation in Games Industry
Monday, 13 February 2017Last Thursday BBC reported that the Chengdu-based Chinese mobile games company Skymoons (天象互动) has launched a studio in Edinburgh, with plans to create an initial 21 highly-skilled games development jobs. This marks a milestone of Western China creative industry in its outbound investment activities. According to the news report, the Scottish Development International (SDI) helped to facilitate this FDI project. Scottish Business and Innovation Minister Paul Wheelhouse commented:
This is a great example of international investment in Scotland's growing digital economy and a good example of Scottish Development International support. Scotland is known around the world for our dynamic and successful creative industries - having produced some of the best known and bestselling games in the world. This investment will help create a very welcome outcome for Edinburgh's games development sector.
In recent years, Chengdu-based mobile Internet entertainment companies like NibiruTech尼毕鲁, DigiSky数字天空, PalmJoys掌娱天下, HaoWan123好玩一二三, DreamWork梦工厂, Moqikaka摩奇卡卡, WindPlay风际网络, GameSoul游魂网络, ZhuoHangTech卓航信息, NPCFuture简乐互动 have been active in overseas market. And "Going Abroad" strategy becomes an important trend for these games developers at Chengdu High-Tech Zone. Focusing on overseas markets, Chengdu enterprises have quickly opened the international market by introducing foreign employees, finding overseas partners and setting up offices abroad.
We observed that Chengdu mobile game companies continue to increase investment in overseas markets. According to incomplete statistics, a total of more than 40 game companies from Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone have successfully exported over 80 games to overseas market since 2011, accumulated more than 500 million USD export wins in 4 years.
In CBBC Chongqing Office, I supported the Creative Industry Research Project commissioned by SDI in 2016. We categorised the entire creative industries into several key sectors: Film, TV/Online, Animation, Gaming, App Development, Publishing/Music, Design, Sport and Tourism. My contribution was in App Development sector. I'm glad to see the achievement SDI have made in creative sectors. If any Scottish company is interested in that research report please contact SDI or our CBBC colleague James Brodie who is based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In the beginning of 2017 we just started a new research project to update our sector knowledge in creative industries with joint effort of our partners, the CBBC and relevant stakeholders will release research report through official channels when the job is done.
