New Year Reception for Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Chongqing

Invited by the Chongqing Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CQAEFI 重庆市外商投资企业协会), I attended the New Year Reception hosted by CQAEFI at Radisson Blu Plaza Chongqing yesterday. Mr. LI Qian, the Deputy Head of Chongqing Commerce Commission delivered an excellent speech on CQ's progress in attracting foreign investment over the past one year. It is remarkable that Chongqing remains No.1 in using foreign capital among tier-2 provinces and municipalities directly under the central government. Mr. Li also mentioned that Chongqing Commerce Commission (recently merged with COFTEC in Nov 2016) is planning a series of Roadshow in other major cities of China to promote Chongqing Free Trade Zone in the next couple of months.

The CBBC has been aware of the progress of CQ FTZ since it's been announced. In October 2016 I lead a delegation of British companies to visit Chongqing Liangjiang New Area, where 2/3 of CQ FTZ will be located. The delegates include UK companies which have set up significant presence in Chongqing, such as Jardines, BP, Clyde&Co, AllDesign, as well as representative from British Consulate-General. In the new year we will be closely looking at the new opportunities of CQ FTZ and work with local stakeholders to strengthen the commercial links between CQ and the UK. Mr. Li also told me on dinner table that technically the destination of railway route "Yu-Xin-Ou" can be extended from Duisburg to London, which sounds promising for providing additional option for UK-China logistics planning.

The other attendees of the reception include regional representatives of American Chamber of Commerce, European Chamber of Commerce, Singapore Chamber of Commerce, Italian Chamber of Commerce, JETRO, Chongqing Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce, and Officials from Chongqing Municipal Commerce Commission. It was a great pleasure to meet with so many old friends and new contacts in a comfortable environment.

We are likely to see some staff leaving from Chongqing Commerce Commission after the merge with the Commission of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (COFTEC). Given that there are more than enough middle-level directors in the newly-establish Commerce Commission (a little bit redundant perhaps), those young staff might quit their current career path, seeking faster promotion. The adaptive nature is understandable.
