Newton Fund China Funding Opportunities

Mr. Richard Baker, the Newton Fund Strategic Manager China who is based in British Embassy Beijing, shared the UK-China Research & Innovation Partnership Fund February 2017 funding update (download).

The Newton Fund builds scientific and innovation partnerships with 16 partner countries to support their economic development and social welfare, and to develop their research and innovation capacity for long-term sustainable growth. It has a total UK Government investment of £735 million up until 2021, with matched resources from the partner countries. The Newton Fund is managed by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and delivered through 15 UK Delivery Partners, which include the Research Councils, the UK National Academies, the British Council, Innovate UK and the Met Office.

Current funding opportunities

Newton International Fellowships

The Academy of Medical Sciences is offering Newton International Fellowships to support early career postdoctoral researchers from China to undertake research in a UK institution for two years. This Fellowship covers clinical or patient oriented research.

The competition closes 22nd March 2017.

Newton Advanced Fellowships

Newton Advanced Fellowships provide established Chinese researchers with an opportunity to develop the research strengths and capabilities of their research group through training, collaboration and reciprocal visits with a partner in the UK. The fellowships are offered in partnership between the Royal Society and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The competition closes 23rd March 2017.

Offshore Renewable Energy Systems

This call is designed to develop the next generation of technologies for the safe, secure, cheap and efficient provision of clean energy, is now live. Applications are sought in multiple areas, with up to £4M available to support UK researchers for up to five awards in the order of up to £800K (80% fEC), with a duration period of three years. It will be matched with NSFC funding of up to 3 million yuan per project to support Chinese researchers.

Future funding opportunities

Climate Science for Service Partnership (CSSP): Air Quality

In anticipation of calls for two research proposals in February 2017, expressions of interest from UK researchers are being taken on the following research topics:

Air Quality impacts on agriculture and ecosystems

Submissions will be sought on research into air quality impacts on agriculture and ecosystem services including the potential for predictability on seasonal to multi-decadal timescales. Research is required that improves modelling of, and evaluation of, either or both the simulation of AQ or its impact on agriculture and ecosystems.

Air quality service development

Submissions will be sought on a scoping study to understand the main priority areas for air quality service development for China. Work is required to understand how information may be derived from future prediction and projection systems, and to provide recommendations relating to planned science improvements concerning the causes of poor AQ and its impacts. This work should involve in-depth engagement with key stakeholders in China to understand specific needs.
